Ask what a chart can't tell you.
A few questions people ask, and what Pensum looks up to answer each one.
- How much protein do I still need today?ReadsToday's entries against your protein target, and the foods you eat most.
- Which days did I go furthest over, and what did it?ReadsYour daily totals, then the entries of the days that stand out.
- Does my weight trend match what I've been eating?ReadsYour weigh-ins against your intake over the same weeks.
- What am I low on, and which of my usual foods would fix it?ReadsYour micronutrient averages and the foods you log most.
- How do my weekends compare to weekdays?ReadsYour daily totals, split by day of the week.
- Which dish on this menu fits the rest of my day?ReadsYour photo of the menu, plus what's left of today's targets.
Every number comes from your data.
Each figure in an answer comes from your diary or from a lookup it ran against it. When your data can't answer the question, it says so. Estimated values, like AI-filled micronutrients, are kept apart from measured ones.
Ask how Pensum itself works, how expenditure is measured or how accurate photo estimates are, and it reads Pensum's own manual and published articles, then links the page it used.
It drafts. You decide.
Goals and targets
Ask for a slower cut or a different macro split and you get a card with the numbers and what they're built on, such as your measured expenditure. Nothing changes until you tap Apply.
Recipes and meals
It can draft a recipe or a meal from foods in the catalogue. A recipe opens in the editor, and nothing is saved until you save it there.
Notes about you
It can offer to remember something, like a food you avoid. The note is kept only if you tap Apply, and only on your phone, where you can read and delete it.
Photos
Add one photo per question: a plate, a menu, a nutrition label, a screenshot. It answers from what's visible and says when a photo is too blurry or dark to read. It won't log a meal from a chat photo. Photo logging does that job, with its portion estimator and every entry saved as estimated.
What leaves your phone, and what stays.
Ask Pensum is off until you turn it on and agree to how it works.
- Your question, and your photo if you add one
- The conversation so far
- The parts of your data it needs, such as recent averages, weigh-ins or a few named days
Never your whole food log. It travels over HTTPS through Pensum's server to our AI provider.
- None of the conversation
- None of your data or photos
- Metering only: an anonymous install ID, token counts and timing
- Your conversations, to reopen, rename or delete
- Notes you chose to apply
- No photos: a reopened chat shows Photo not kept
Conversations and notes are left out of the automatic cloud backup.
Answers are AI-generated and can be wrong, and they are not medical advice. It answers general nutrition questions directly, but it won't diagnose, dose medication or set personal targets for a diagnosed condition. Read the privacy policy.
One question, one AI action.
The lookups Ask Pensum runs to answer a question don't count extra. AI is unlimited for your first 30 days. After that, the free plan includes 30 AI actions each month, shared with meal photos, label scans, recipe imports and micronutrient fills.
Pensum Plus adds unlimited AI actions, micronutrients that fill in on their own as you log, and a daily cloud backup.
“I've tried other similar apps but this is without a doubt the best I've used so far. The Insights tab and all the trends over your own data are insanely good, and you can get a sense of both your macros and micros.”
Ask Pensum questions.
What data does Ask Pensum read?
Your diary: meals, macros, micronutrients, weigh-ins, targets and target history, plus the recipes, meals and favorites you saved. It looks up only what a question needs, such as average intake over recent weeks or the entries of a few named days, never your whole food log at once.
Is my data stored on your servers?
No. Your question, any photo and the data needed to answer it go to our AI provider through Pensum's server and are not stored by us. We keep technical metering data only: an anonymous install ID, token counts and timing. Conversations are kept on your phone, where you can reopen, rename or delete them.
Can Ask Pensum change my targets?
It can draft new goals, targets, recipes, meals and notes as a card in the chat. Nothing changes until you tap Apply, and a drafted recipe opens in the editor, where nothing is saved until you save it.
Can I ask about a photo?
Yes, one photo per question: a plate, a menu, a nutrition label or a screenshot. It answers from what is visible and says when a photo is too blurry to read. It will not log a meal from a chat photo; the photo logging tool does that, with its portion estimator and every entry marked as estimated.
Is Ask Pensum free?
Each question you send is one AI action, and the lookups it runs to answer it don't count extra. AI is unlimited for your first 30 days. After that, the free plan includes 30 AI actions each month. Pensum Plus adds unlimited AI actions.
Is Ask Pensum medical advice?
No. Answers are AI-generated and can be wrong. It answers general nutrition questions directly, but it does not diagnose, dose medication, or work out personal targets for a diagnosed condition. Those go to a doctor or dietitian.
